We welcomed The Maldon Camera Club for our first Exhibition of the year.
This exhibition opens to the public on Friday 17th February and runs until 6th March. Showing a diverse mixture of images, portraits, landscapes, both black and white, and colour. Beautifully hung and displayed, all works framed and mounted. New members welcome!
‘Fish and Photos’ is brought to us by Vicky Phillips and Den Phillips. It opens on Saturday 10th March and runs until Tuesday 27th March.
This is a lovely exhibition, which looks terrific in our light and airy gallery space. It’s a wonderful juxtaposition of Den’s stunning black and white photographs celebrating sail, sea and skies, and Vicky’s beautiful delicate prints on paper and board, using a centuries-old traditional Japanese technique. Definitely not to be missed!
Our Easter Exhibition – we welcome back the very talented Natalie Huntsman for her exhibition of new works from 30 th March to 17 th April. Natalie paints upcycled and found objects to great decorative effect. She specialises in over-sized images of our local Birds - colourful and quirky, its graffiti art – but not as we usually know it!
A Fine Collection
Our latest Exhibition - running until Tuesday 8th May, is ‘A Fine Collection’ created by the Night and Day Textile Group and curated by Jill Hipsey.
It’s a fabulous, summery display of embroidery and stitching artistry by this well-established local group. The display includes pictures using colourful silks and fabrics, resulting in beautiful and unique colour combinations and textures. There are also bowls, bags, brooches and other tempting textile items to purchase – go on, treat yourself! Whatever the weather is doing out there – it’s Summer inside the Maeldune!
East Coast Artists
Our new Exhibition is a celebration of artists whose careers span six decades. ‘East Coast Artists’, are six printmakers and painters who live and work along the fringes of the Essex Coastline and the Rivers Colne, Blackwater and Chelmer. It is a rich variety of original artworks – paintings, etchings, linocut prints, with a variety of subjects and influences. There will be some surprises! The exhibition runs from 11th to 29th May.
STEPHEN WENLOCK is showing here for the first time. Stephen has the rare skill of the miniaturist painter and uses the finest of brushes to achieve incredible detail and richly coloured paintings of glowing luminosity with his very own personal vision and interpretation of traditional stories.
STEPHEN LEATHER is a young artist to watch out for. He lives and works in Wivenhoe and is inspired by his family heritage of boat design and ship building. His grandfather was the renowned boat designer and writer John Leather. Encouraged by James Dodds, Stephen’s lino prints display a superb sense of design, craftsmanship and they are full of originality and energy. He pushes the linocut medium to another dimension.
CAROL WHEELDON has had a long career in etching and has run workshops in Cambridge and at Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester. Now living on the Colne River, her etchings are inspired by close observation of trees, birds and the surrounding estuary. On show is a sequence of etchings made after watching the total eclipse of the sun in 1999 at Goldhanger on the Blackwater.
HEIDI JUKES is a Maldon painter who has exhibited in many prestigious galleries in London including The Saatchi Gallery, Barbican, and the Royal Academy. She paints in her studio beside the Blackwater. Her quiet, delicate paintings reflect the translucent light and atmosphere of this beautiful estuary.
JAMES HEWITT has been painting in this part of Essex for many years. His paintings are firmly rooted in the tradition of John Constable, and the ‘en plein air’ painters. His small but beautifully evocative landscapes are painted in oils on location, and in his studio overlooking the Blackwater Estuary.
RACHEL SPENDER lives in the Chelmer River Valley and was a student at Colchester Art School, and at Brighton, and studied etching with Carol Wheeldon. Her beautiful and evocative etchings derive from her many sketchbooks, there is always one close to hand.
Our first Exhibition in June (1st – 19th June) is the Essex Monochrome Group – their annual exhibition specialising in the power and beauty of black and white photography. Stunning images.
